Help for the Control Freak: Surrender Control to God

I like to be in control. I bet you do too.

Being in control allows me to feel like I can plan my own destiny. I can chart the course I want my life to take, and then take steps to make that happen.

However, there are some things you cannot control

  • You cannot control whether your loved ones will live a long and healthy life
  • You cannot control if your company decides to lay you off
  • You cannot control other people and the decisions they make (as much as you might want to).
  • You cannot even control whether it rains or is sunny tomorrow

So why do we cling to this semblance of control in our life? This false illusion of security we can create? I don't really know.

What I do know is that I cannot let go of the small amount of control I have unless I give it to one who is worthy of it.

Someone who is wiser than me, who never messes up, and who can see what is going to happen in the future. Someone who is just and loving.

The good news is we have a Father - the God of all Gods - who is all these things. Today I choose to lay down my semblance of control at his feet, and I submit to his will.

Tomorrow I know I will be tempted to take back control once again. But for now - I choose to lay it at the feet of my King. And the result is a perfect peace knowing that He has already got it figured out already.

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. Luke 9:23-24
